R&D Platforms


Institutes

For front-end product R&D, CMI has set up China Merchants Cruise Research Institute (CMCI) and China Merchants Marine and Offshore Research Institute (CMMI) in Shanghai and Shenzhen, respectively. Driven by the dual engines, CMI carries out in-depth research and development of cruise ships, offshore structures, and deep-sea engineerings. At the same time, with the integration of the R&D innovation resources, CMI focuses on those long-term future industry research and product developments, the industry forward-looking and transformative technology research, the development of new types of green (environmental friendly) marine equipment, the development of the key equipment/systems/new materials, the development and industrialization of the new technologies and products, etc.



Platforms

The subsidiary companies have established 27 science and technology R&D platforms in total, including 1 state-approved enterprise technology center, 1 provincial key laboratory, 3 provincial engineering technology research centers.




R&D Projects

CMI continued to increase R&D spending, reaching 700 million RMB per year for five consecutive years since 2018. It has been awarded more than 40 national and provincial science and technology R&D projects, including leading the key projects of network collaborative manufacturing and intelligent factory from the Ministry of Science and Technology, high-tech ship projects from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and projects funded by Marine renewable energy fund from the State Oceanic Administration.




External Cooperation

CMI gradually strengthen the external R&D cooperation on science and technology, and signed strategic cooperation agreements with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Wuhan University of Technology, China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL), Shenzhen Gas, CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, Institute of Deep Sea (Chinese Academy of Sciences), China International Engineerign Consulting Corporation (IECC), Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Classification Society (CCS), , RINA, Imperial College London, University of Bologna, Edinburgh University, etc. The joint Laboratory of Deep-sea Equipment has been established with the Institute of Deep Ocean of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the joint laboratory of New Materials has been established with Imperial College London and the electric propulsion system of cruise ships has been successfully developed with CRRC using DC networking technology from high-speed trains. CMI works with RINA and CCS to carry out marine tests and applications of hydrogen and ammonia fuel.
